A rooftop farm situated on top of the Old Georgetown Road parking garage will soon provide residents and local restaurants with fresh produce.
Up Top Acres is building a 17,000-square-foot rooftop farm at Bethesda’s Pike and Rose. The new location will serve as a source of fresh produce for local residents and businesses. Up Top Acres plans to set the farm up once winter has ended, with planting taking place in March; the company expects to start selling produce from the new location in May. A membership program will take effect once the farm is open, giving members a guaranteed weekly share of the produce. The remainder of the estimated 20,000 pounds of produce grown yearly will be available for purchase by non-members as well as business clients. Products will be a variety of fresh, seasonal farm and garden products like radishes, turnips, carrots, flowers, peppers tomatoes and herbs. Customers will also be able to purchase pure honey from the farm’s beehives.
Up Top Acres is a new company, founded in 2015, and it currently has four operating rooftop farms in Washington, D.C., two near National’s Park, one on top of Bethesda's Equinox Health Club on Elm Street, and another on top of the Oyamel restaurant in D.C.
The company’s business clients include Blue Jacket, Equinox, Jaleo, Little Red Fox, The Oval Room, A Baked Joint and Glen’s Garden Market. While the company also intends to cater to business clientele, Up Top Acres has not yet determined which and how many businesses will be on the new location's client list.
