TikTok makes us do crazy things—and slathering fresh watermelon with yellow mustard is no exception.
First, it was bell peppers instead of bread, then it was pasta with roasted tomatoes and whole blocks of feta. 2021's newest TikTok taste treat is watermelon and yellow mustard ... and it's actually pretty good.
Music superstar Lizzo made the most well-known video about this so far, with over 26.5 million views to date. This has led to hordes of people trying it out for themselves.

Here are my thoughts on why this weird combination actually works: On its own, watermelon is perfectly crisp and pleasant. When you add a second flavor profile, like salty, spicy, or even umami-savory, it bumps it up to something sublime. Think of how popular watermelon and feta salads are—you can't swing a cat without seeing it on a trendy menu!
I feel like the people being amazed by watermelon and mustard have never had watermelon w tajín or salt

If you are going to give it a try, make sure that you have a good watermelon (don't even think about using a mealy one) and that you actually like yellow mustard. It can only go up from there, right?
For now, the Twitter-verse is split on this food combination. Some love it and even more hate it, but at least everyone is talking about it.

I just tried the watermelon mustard thing. I, now, understand Lizzo's moment of confusion. It wasn't nasty but my brain and my taste buds were trying to figure out what was happening. (And, yes, my stomach is fine. 😂) pic.twitter.com/eAtKDH66gb

For the most part, people who do like it are just somewhat confused.
I tried watermelon and yellow mustard together, and I don't know it works together, but it does... pic.twitter.com/rygtgHqwAp
