Do Your Pipes Have Cracks?
Some other signs on our list are a bit harder to identify as an indication you need pipe replacement; however, this is not one of those signs! If your plumbing has cracks, it should be fairly easy to see, as water will be coming out of it as it goes through your plumbing system.
Another way to identify a crack in your home's pipes is a rather obvious one: are there any wet spots in your home? Not only can this lead to water damage, but mold growth as well if you're not careful and proactive.
Are Your Pipes Leaking?
Just because your pipes don't appear to be cracked doesn't mean they aren't leaking.
Loose connections between pipes, clogged lines, high water pressure, and pipe corrosion, among other issues, can cause leaks. And while some leaks may seem small or insignificant, over time, they can become bigger (and more expensive) problems that you'll ultimately have to deal with.
Is the Water Discolored?
Is the water in your bathtub or kitchen sink crystal clear? Great! Is the water in your bathtub or kitchen sink yellow or brown? You're in serious need of a replacement.
While this may be a temporary problem due to your local water supply, it can also be a sign your pipes are corroding inside. A good rule of thumb is to give it a day or so to allow your water to clear up. If it doesn't, avoid drinking or bathing in it.
How Old Are Your Pipes?
If your home utilizes PVC plumbing pipes, then you're likely not ever going to need to replace them. However, not all pipes are created equal. Below is a breakdown of longevity for certain pipe types:
- Galvanized steel: 20 to 50 years
- Brass: 40 to 45 years
- Copper: 50-plus years
- Cast iron: 75 to 100 years
