Honestly, there are only so many ways you can entertain yourself while behind the wheel and still qualify as a "good" driver, but keeping your sanity on the road is essential. We know what extended hours of driving can do—especially if traffic is involved. Next time you're on the road, try these five things and see if it makes your ride more tolerable and makes you any happier of a person.

1. Eat some snacks ... because food is the best form of entertainment.

Get in the habit of packing some finger food in the morning that you would enjoy on the way home from work. The stretch between lunch and dinner is already long enough, but with a long commute, it makes no sense to be tired and hungry. Try some granola, pretzels, chips, or peanuts. These snacks are low maintenance and will curb your hunger pangs.

2. Return those phone calls you've been putting off.

I'm sure you have that one friend or family member who doesn't recognize your social cues when trying to end the conversation. And that's the very reason you haven't returned their phone call in weeks, but now you have the time. Talking on the phone feels like it speeds up your minutes. We can spend hours on the phone at home, sitting in the same spot, not doing a thing. You can now reserve your car time for all the conversations you've been procrastinating. Just remember to only use Bluetooth or headphones – we need both hands on the wheel!

3. Listen to a podcast.

This is pretty obvious, but a podcast is a great way to stay informed on trending topics, news, and events that interest you—without scrolling through your phone. This is your custom entertainment. There is literally a podcast for any and everything—you can delight yourself in a light comedy or dive into the darkest unsolved tragedies through mystery and thriller podcasts. The average podcast lasts about an hour; hopefully, that's the full duration of your trip!

4. Learn a new language.

There's nothing more productive than a class on the road. You could spend your time picking up a new language using audible software from companies like Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone offers a monthly subscription as low as $5.99. The subscription includes a series of 10-minute classes and allows you to download the lessons in advance, so you don't have to worry about being connected to a network. And the best part is you can try it out for free during a three-day trial!

5. Be still.

Not literally, because that would be impossible—unless you're stuck in traffic. Even so, take a deep breath and be mindful of other drivers on the road. We know how much anxiety can build up during a long commute. Enjoy your ride, observe the scenery, and know that you will make it to your destination ... eventually!
