Sleigh rides, skiing, and ice fishing are just a few of the fun things you can do in Deep Creek.

Winters in the mid-Atlantic are relatively mild. If you want to really experience winter, you’ll have to head west to Deep Creek.

Located just two hours away from Baltimore, Deep Creek Lake State Park is a year-round recreational destination. In the summer, visitors are drawn to Maryland’s largest freshwater lake for boating, water skiing, and swimming. But Deep Creek also has a lot to offer in the winter, too.

Deep Creek is home to Maryland’s only ski resort, Wisp. Wisp has 34 ski runs ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, perfect for skiers and snowboarders of every ability. The ski resort has a 169-room lodge located on site that includes restaurants, cafes, and shops. In addition to Wisp, Deep Creek has several state parks with extensive cross-country ski trails.

Snowshoeing, Tubing, and Ice Fishing

Skiing isn’t the only winter sport you can experience in Deep Creek. There are a variety of fun outdoor sports where you’ll work up a sweat while enjoying the wilderness. You can strap on a pair of snowshoes and trudge through the backwoods, grab an inflatable and head to the tubing hills, or take a spin around the ice rink. If you really want to get adventurous, try some ice fishing. With a little time and patience, you might even catch enough fish for dinner!

Relaxing and Retail Therapy

If your idea of a vacation is curling up by the fire with a cocktail, Deep Creek has that, too. Choose from a roster of hotels, bed and breakfasts, vacation lodges, and cabins, all complete with wood-burning fireplaces.

Hunt for treasures at quaint local shops or visit Spruce Forest Artisan Village and watch artists create pieces from stained glass, pottery, and metal. Don’t forget the ultimate winter adventure, an old-fashioned sleigh ride through the snow.
