Labor Day is a summer holiday when we celebrate the American worker and say an official goodbye to summer. According to late 1800s etiquette, we also have to stop wearing white shoes, pants, dresses, and handbags after Labor Day. So why not give your whites one last spin with a Labor Day White Party?

Decorations:

Decorating with white is easy and works in any indoor or outdoor setting. Drape tables and seating areas with white tablecloths, breaking it up with greenery from your yard or garden. Set the mood with candles, white lanterns, and fairy lights available in bulk. Add some whimsy with white balloons, streamers, and some of those cute swan pool floats—which are surely to be on sale by now.

Food and Drinks:

When it comes to the menu, more is less. You don’t have to go completely white when it comes to the food; just make sure you don’t serve too messy food. Guests can nosh on a cheese and charcuterie board on arrival. For dinner, a menu of grilled chicken, fresh corn salad, and parsley potatoes is filling and easy to cook up in summer. Create a s’mores bar with white chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows for dessert. Guests can roast them over a backyard fire pit, or you can improvise with Sterno in clay pots.

Keep things simple at the bar with a few brands of beer, white wine, and a signature cocktail. White cranberry Cosmopolitan or white sangria made with summer peaches can be made up in pitchers ahead of time and kept in the fridge. For something less complicated, serve Prosecco with a St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur splash. Make sure to pick up some shatterproof glasses so no one gets hurt.

Party Planning:

Memorialize the night with a photo booth. Hang a solid color sheet as a background or string fairy lights on a tall fence. Supply guests with a variety of white props like feather boas, giant glasses, hats, and cardboard captions. At the end of the evening, pass out those leftover sparklers from the Fourth of July for a glowing send-off to summer!
