"The Science of Well Being" class is free and available online.
Yale University is offering its extremely popular happiness course, "The Science of Well Being", online for free to anyone who wants to take it.
The course was designed by Yale Psychology Professor Laurie Santos and is an online version of a similar class taught on campus. That class, called “Psychology and the Good Life”, was created by Santos in 2018, and it has become the most popular class ever taught at the school in Yale’s over 300-year history. At one point, one in every four students at Yale was enrolled in the class. The demand was so great that people outside of Yale wanted in on the class, and so, the online version was created.
“In this course, you will engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits. As preparation for these tasks, Professor Laurie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life.” From the course description."
So here’s how this works, interested people can sign up for the class through Coursera online learning platform. While it is free to take, a $49 fee will grant you access to graded assignments, full course material, and a certificate of completion. Currently, there are 1,313,565 people enrolled in the class. The next session starts today, March 27, 2020!
The 10-week class will cover topics like:
- Misconceptions about Happiness
- Why Our Expectations are so Bad
- How we can Overcome Our Biases
- Stuff that Really Makes Us Happy
- Putting Strategies Into Practice
- A Personal Rewirement challenge
Those who choose to pay for the certificate will have 180 days from the day of payment to complete the class. There is financial aid available to those who qualify. You can sign up for the class right here.
There are videos, readings, quizzes, and assignments, and each week’s lessons can require anywhere from 20 minutes to three hours to complete. The entire class is online, very low key, none of the readings are required, and you can complete the lessons at a time that works for you. Oh, and the class is taught by Laurie Santos, the original creator so it is the real deal!
This is a really awesome opportunity to take some time and work on self-care, and a perfect way to fill some hours spent at home over the next few weeks. Plus, that certificate issued with your name next to Yale is pretty tempting.
Coursera is full of awesome free courses and is worth a look to see what might interest you. Did you know you could take a class from Yale for free online? Is this class something you might want to take? Do you know anyone who has taken it? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts.
