A power strip can work wonders.

The number of electronic devices in our lives is multiplying like mosquitos in a marsh. There are devices like home assistants, smart locks, smart cameras, smart shades, and more, all of which supposedly make our lives a little easier. However, powering all of these devices requires a good deal of electricity, and if you're not keeping an eye on things, you could be wasting energy.

Experts estimate that approximately 10 to 15 percent of all electricity used at home is consumed by electronic devices that are either in use or just plugged in. That's because there are actually a few different modes in which our electronic devices operate. There's active, meaning they're on and operational; there's active standby, meaning they're drawing power so they're ready for use (think mobile phone or computer charger); there's passive standby, like a microwave not in use; and there's completely off.

Depending on what type of devices you own, using power strips with switches can help you regulate your devices' power draw. We also recommend looking for appliances with the Energy Star label and replacing light bulbs with energy-friendly LEDs. Combined, these easy steps can help you save money and reduce your impact overall.

For a more drastic impact, you can always look at adding solar panels or replacing your old air conditioner or heater as well, as they're often some of the largest culprits, but that can always wait.
