Not only does volunteering benefit the group or organization that your teen is supporting, but it helps them become a better person, too.

No matter what your age, volunteering is an incredible and rewarding way to spend your time! But for teenagers, the benefits might be more than you think! As a goal for 2018, try encouraging your teen to volunteer for a group they're passionate about.

Improve Mental Health

When you make the decision to volunteer, you do more than boost personal morale. When people connect socially, their interaction with others prevents loneliness. In addition, staying busy with service to others can alleviate depression and other mental health concerns. This is another good reason to volunteer! Expand Horizons

When I asked a high schooler about the importance of volunteerism, she told me that she liked getting a new perspective on how other people live. What a great way to expand their horizons and expose them to other cultures and communities! This helps develop a more well-rounded psyche. I love that our teens see the world differently when they volunteer!

Meet School Requirements

Another reason to volunteer is to fulfill your requirements for high school. Many schools require students to complete a certain number of community service hours per semester. Also, adding volunteer hours to job applications and college applications can show them the kind of person your teenager is and set them apart from the rest of the pack.
What can you do to encourage your teen to volunteer? Check around your community to see where they need help, and jump right in. Check with the Boys and Girls Club of America, tutoring centers, your church, or with your local library. Another great resource is the Volunteers of America Colorado Branch.
