It will become Colorado's 42nd state park.

Colorado is known for the amazing state parks that highlight the picturesque views and amazing natural wonders across the state. It was announced last week by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) that Colorado will get its newest state park after the acquisition of a 19,200-acre parcel of land near Trinidad, which includes the landmark Fishers Peak.

The new state park was included in an executive order signed by Governor Jared Polis in September of 2019. The land was purchased in a partnership with CPW, the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, and Trust for Public Land and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) in February of 2019. The land was then transferred to CPW on April 2.

“The state’s acquisition of Fishers Peak is an exciting milestone for Colorado outdoor recreationists, wildlife watchers, hunters and residents and businesses of Southern Colorado,” Governor Jared Polis said. “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that Coloradans highly value their open spaces and outdoor recreation opportunities. Colorado was one of the few states to keep our state parks open during this entire crisis because recreating at a safe space outdoors is a healthy part of our lifestyles. Adding Fishers Peak as our next state park will increase opportunities to explore a unique and stunning part of Colorado.”

Planning and development to turn the largely undeveloped property into a state park with trails, facilities, wildlife areas, and more are underway.

Fishers Peak is the highest peak in the United States east of Interstate 25 and stands at 9,663 feet, and will be the second-largest state park in Colorado. The iconic landmark is just seven miles from the New Mexico border and six miles southeast of Trinidad. The area is home to diverse wildlife and native species, including mule deer, elk, white-tailed deer, mountain lions, and black bears.

Right now, the area is closed to the public; however, CPW plans to approach development in phases, allowing for some limited public access as the park is developed.

Fishers Peak State Park will bring more visitors into the area and provide opportunities for the City of Trinidad and Las Animas County. It will also present more opportunities for the study and preservation of the lands, wildlife, and ecosystems of the state.
