At Hanover Tavern, located about 20 miles north of Richmond, in Hanover, Virginia, you can do exactly that and more! Established in 1733, Hanover Tavern is the second-oldest bar in Virginia, and the 13th-oldest in the country. For nearly 300 years, Hanover Tavern has seen its share of notable visitors (such as George Washington) and has had numerous owners, the most famous of which were John and Eleanor Parks Shelton -- the inlaws of Hanover native and American patriot, Patrick Henry. Though the tavern offers a rich history, it still holds up as a local favorite for good food, drinks, and community events. Its current owner, the nonprofit Hanover Tavern Foundation, is dedicated to restoring and preserving the historic building, as well as utilizing the space for educational purposes. Today, Hanover Tavern continues to be a thriving community and cultural center, holding dozens of events and programs every year. Some of these special events include concerts, theater performances by the Virginia Repertory Theater, bus tours, themed dinners, history summer camps, and even paranormal investigations. Hanover Tavern is also an event space and can be rented for private events. Upcoming events include a Haunted Hanover Tavern Tour on April 18, a Paranormal Investigation on April 21, and a "Shots Heard 'Round the World!" Liquor Pairing Dinner on April 22. The Tavern also hosts an Autumnfest every fall and plenty of colonial-themed holiday events at Christmastime. And of course, besides being a place for cultural enrichment and entertainment, Hanover Tavern still serves delicious meals at their restaurant. Menu items include classic Southern favorites, such as shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. They also have $5 burger and fries on Wednesday nights.
