Soups, sandwiches, and ice cream, oh my! You mean, oh yum!

There are few things as idyllic as perfectly cold ice cream on a hot Maryland summer day, and it gets even better when that ice cream is super-fresh and homemade by a cow-to-cream dairy. There are 10 dairy farms that make up the Maryland's Best Ice Cream Trail, and Broom's Bloom Dairy is one that needs to be on everyone's road trip list this summer. Located at 1700 South Fountain Green Road in Bel Air, they have a beautiful and nicely stocked store, a surprisingly large menu, and of course, amazing ice cream.

Accessible from either I95 or Bel Air Road (not the bypass), Broom's is easy to get to. They have a good-sized parking lot in front of and around the store. There is some indoor seating in the store, but because of the current pandemic, they are limiting the number of people that can be inside at one time (and masks are required). There is also nice outdoor seating (more spaced than in this image) where you can enjoy your food or ice cream.

Inside the store, there are locally produced breads, meats, milk, butters, and cheeses. Many of these products are produced by Broom's (including the homemade cheese that they use in their lunch dishes), and some come from neighboring farms. Most people seek them out for their old-fashioned, hand-dipped ice cream that they make there on the farm, and for good reason. There are multiple amazing flavors to try.

Even if you're just there for the ice cream, treat yourself to lunch. There is a sizeable lunch menu that they serve till 7 p.m. (except Mondays, when they're closed), that includes soups, salads, sandwiches, and quiche. They offer both Maryland crab soup and cream of crab soup, and both options are offered atop their homemade (with their own cheddar) mac and cheese, or you could get their mac and cheese topped with their chili, their BBQ pork, or plain.

The servings are generous, the food is delicious, and the ice cream is perfection. If you haven't made a visit to this dairy, it is well worth the trip.
