Fog and icy conditions led to a 63-car pileup on I-64 this morning, on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
Around 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning, approximately 63 cars were involved in a pileup collision near the Queens Creek Overpass on Interstate 64, around mile marker 240 in York County, Virginia. Fog and icy conditions were present at the time of the crash.
The accident closed the eastbound lanes of I-64, and then another multi-vehicle crash closed the westbound lanes. There have been conflicting reports regarding the number of cars involved—some sources say 35 and others say 45. (Update: As of 1 p.m., sources are saying 63 cars were involved.)

At least 35 people have been transported to the hospital with injuries. At least two people sustained life-threatening injuries.
Officials are still investigating the crash, and rescue crews are on the scene. Detours are in place, but please avoid the area if at all possible.
