Giant pink heart illuminates the night sky as a symbol of hope.

Downtown Denver is full of tall empty buildings right now, a city deserted as its residents stay home, for the time being. If you happen to be downtown and look outside, you might notice the building at 1144 15th Street, also known as the Optive building, looks a little different right now.

The building is sporting a bright pink heart every day and night from now until the statewide stay-at-home order is lifted. It's a tribute to anyone working the front lines of the pandemic, and intended to remind us that we're not alone.

Senior property manager Stephanie Rosenthal decided to take the canvas of empty windows and turn the dark building into something a little more inspiring. And with help from some engineers, weeks of design and planning, and a lot of pink LED lights, the heart was constructed and lit up last week.

The pink lights are actually wrapped with pink-colored gels purchased from a local theatre company. "We put a whiteboard up in each window, and then we put LED light fixtures wrapped in pink in-between the whiteboard and the window itself," said Rosenthal.

The Optiv building stands just over 600 feet high, making it one of the tallest in Denver; the heart itself spans across 8 floors.

Along with the lighting of the heart, there are Christmas lights going up all over the city, and people are coming out to play music, sing, and howl at the moon every night, letting us know that although we stand a socially acceptable distance apart, we still have each other.
