A country resort near Beaver Creek will eliminate the use and sale of plastic water bottles this spring.

The Westin Resort and Spa has big plans for 2020 to significantly reduce its use of plastic bottles and will start by eliminating the sale and use of plastic water bottles this spring.

General manager Kristin Pryor stated the hotel will completely stop using plastic water bottles on May 1. The change in policy will eliminate more than 100,000 plastic bottles a year at the hotel!

Pryor stated in an interview with 9News that management realized the hotel uses "over 133,000 water bottles a year." Pryor believes the change could make an environmental impact and serve as inspiration for others to do the same.

"We all hear the stories about plastic containers sitting on loading docks and no one will buy it anymore," said Pryor. "The best way to make that impact is just not use it."

Due to the rising cost of recycling, much of the recycled items end up on loading docks or they get dumped in the ocean. The hotel's plan is to skip the recycling step altogether and focus on reducing the amount of plastic used.

From the beginning of May, The Westin Resort and Spa will not have plastic bottles, at all. They'll be replaced with glass bottles than can be washed and refilled at water stations around the hotel.

And it's not just the water bottles that are gonna be disappearing come May. There are additional plans to eliminate the use of small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion currently available in the hotel rooms, as well.
