Calling all aspiring actors—an exciting opportunity has just presented itself for a movie shooting in Central Virginia. Tapawingo, which recently began filming in Hopewell, has released a casting call for background extras. People between the ages of 15 and 80 are needed to fulfill a hodge-podge of roles through June and July, including convenience store clerks, swimmers, bus passengers, and more.
To apply, all you need to do is send the following information to [email protected]:
- Headshot and full-body shot

Those who are cast will also be required to take a COVID-19 test.
Described as a "coming-of-age comedy," the film stars Jon Heder of the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite as "a listless oddball who becomes the unlikely bodyguard for a misfit teenager and finds himself in the crosshairs of the town’s family of bullies." The cast features names like Billy Zane from Titanic, Amanda Bearse of Married ... With Children, and Home Improvement's Blake Clark.
Most of the filming will be completed in Hopewell, with additional scenes shot in Richmond and Petersburg.
Governor Ralph Northam gave the cast a warm welcome in an address last Friday announcing the beginning of filming in Central Virginia over the summer.
"The film industry contributes an immediate, powerful economic impact and the opportunity to share the beauty of our Commonwealth with a far-reaching audience," he said in a press release. "From the preserved history of Harriet to the rolling landscapes of The Good Lord Bird, Virginia offers a unique palette for filmmakers."
Director Dylan K. Narang spoke of the "support and hospitality" the town has shown the cast and crew, saying "It is the perfect spot for our movie, and everyone we have talked to has bent over backward to help us get this movie made. I can’t thank the people of Hopewell and Virginia enough for making my decision to film here an easy one.”
In addition to the previously mentioned movies, the region has also been the backdrop for the hit AMC series The Walking Dead and the biopic Loving. The upcoming Hulu series Dopesick, based on the non-fiction book by Beth Macy exploring the opioid crisis, will also be filmed in Hopewell.
