The promo code is good for one $15 Lyft ride.

Are you going out on Cinco de Mayo? Before you order that extra margarita, make sure you have a plan for getting home. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that at least a third of fatalities on the holiday are related to drunk driving, a tragic statistic in any measure. But a local non-profit is working to make sure people have fun while staying safe in the process.

The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), announced they would be providing free rides home through their ride program SoberRide. In a press release, WRAP President Kurt Erickson emphasized the organization's need to "mitigate risk" for those hitting the bars as well as for the sake of drivers who may be on the road at the time.

"We therefore urge all Greater Washington residents to respect public health restrictions this Cinco de Mayo. However, if persons do venture out and alcohol is involved, we are all benefited from the safety net role which the region’s SoberRide program plays to remove drunk drivers from area roadways," he said.

The promo code can be redeemed through the Lyft app and is good for a ride worth up to $15. The ride program will be active during the peak holiday hours on Wednesday, May 5 at 4 p.m. and run through the following day on May 6 at 2 a.m.

The non-profit has been known to offer a similar promotion on alcohol-adjacent holidays throughout the year, including St. Patrick's Day and Halloween. In 2019, almost 800 people utilized SoberRide after the Cinco de Mayo festivities, and a total of over 80,000 rides have been given since the program's inception in 1991.

SoberRide will be offering its services to the following areas:

  • District of Columbia
  • Maryland's Montgomery and Prince George's counties
  • Northern Virginia's Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties

If you need a ride this Cinco de Mayo, the code will be available the day of starting at 3 p.m. and will be eligible for the first 1,500 people. You can visit SoberRide.com for all the important details. Stay safe, everyone!
