One news outlet reports that Falwell was involved as a third party in the affair.
Jerry Falwell, Jr., the president of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, has resigned from his position. The announcement comes after he came forward with the fact that his wife Becki had a years-long affair with a pool boy the couple met at a hotel in Miami Beach eight years ago.
According to Falwell, he revealed the affair because the man involved was blackmailing them—threatening to come forward and "deliberately embarrass my wife, family, and Liberty University unless we agreed to pay him substantial monies."
The man involved was Giancarlo Granda, who told Reuters that Falwell was involved in his sexual encounters with Becki and that he "enjoyed watching from the corner of the room." The affair allegedly took place in multiple places around the country over the next few years, with Granda even visiting the Falwells at their home in Virginia.
Falwell insisted that he, however, was not involved. Though, according to Reuters, Granda has emails and texts to prove it.
Falwell, who took the reins of Liberty, a deeply conservative private Christian university, after his father passed in 2007, has been the center of controversy over the years, the most recent of which caused him to be placed on a leave of absence earlier in the month, after he posted an inappropriate photo of himself and a young woman on Instagram. Specifically, Falwell has been criticized for hypocritical behavior, since the university has strict policies and beliefs regarding alcohol and sexuality, and requires that all students sign a code of conduct promising to abstain.
Liberty University is expected to issue a statement later today.
