Brb, I'm moving to Brighton.

On February 2, the Brighton City Council voted to approve a new program that will permit miniature goats on residential properties. The Goat Keeping program will run from March 1, 2021, to March 1, 2023.

However, there are some parameters around how to purchase a miniature goat and keep it as a pet—so don't go out and buy one just yet. The program will only approve 10 permits through a lottery system. Additionally, the program includes specific terms. Whoever receives the permit must only acquire disbudded female miniature goats, and there can only be a maximum of two goats per property.

All goats must receive a rabies vaccination and on-site breeding is not allowed. Any applicant must be on a single-family detached property with landowner permission. Lastly, $100 permits are required which include periodic inspections, tests on goat care, and waste management plans.

Brighton residents have until February 28 to submit their names and addresses to the lottery. City staff will check eligibility for each entry and review property type and lot size before drawing names from the lottery. City Council and city staff will draw the names on March 2 at 10 a.m. and distribute the application to each lottery winner. Residents may attend the event as long as they wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines. The event will also be live-streamed on Facebook through the city's official Facebook account.
