Several dangerous snakes—including black mambas, cobras, and rattlesnakes—were found in the home.

A strange and sad discovery was made last week in Charles County, Maryland. Neighbors of a man in Pomfret called police to report their neighbor was lying unresponsive in his home. When police arrived at the home, they found the man dead and realized the home was filled with more than 100 snakes! Many of the snakes were venomous and illegal for individuals to keep as pets in Maryland.

The 49-year-old man has not been identified and the cause of death is under investigation.

"The man, 49, was pronounced deceased. Inside the house, more than 100 venomous and non-venomous snakes of different varieties were discovered in tanks situated on racks," writes the Charles County Sheriff's Office. "There were no obvious signs of foul play and the decedent was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy."

The menagerie of snakes included cobras, rattlesnakes, pythons, and rattlesnakes. The largest snake found in the house was a 14-foot yellow Burmese python, similar to the one held by Britney Spears during a performance at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards.

Charles County Animal Control had to reach out to two reptile experts in North Carolina and Virginia to relocate the snakes. It appears the animals were well taken care of and stored in appropriately sized tanks and habitats.

The man's body was transported to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore for an autopsy. Anyone in Maryland who possesses more than four snakes or reptiles is required to get a snake handlers permit from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
