You’re going to have to wait a while for that photo op at the Reflecting Pool.

One of the most iconic landmarks on the National Mall will be out of commission for a month or so. The National Park Service is conducting its annual drain and cleaning of the National Mall’s central water feature. Draining the pool helps control algae and parasite growth in the 2,000-foot pool. Several sections of turf around the National Mall will also be under repair, some through June. The park service hopes to have the pool cleaned and filled in time for the National Cherry Blossom Festival on March 20, 2020.

It will take about six days to drain the pool, and then workers can scrub the surface and address any repairs that are needed. Last year the park service had to replace a water line that was impeding the pool's circulation. It will take around the same amount of time to refill four million gallons of water back into the pool.

In addition to work on the pool, the park service will be repairing sections of turf along the National Mall. Warmer weather, cleats, and foot traffic on the grass has caused it to wear away. Park personnel will cordon off the grass to give it a chance to rest and restore itself.

Here are the sections that will be closed:

  • Mall Panels 16, 18, 20, 22, 24: Feb. to Mar. 31, 2020
  • Raul Wallenberg Field: Feb. 7 to Jun. 1, 2020
  • 17th Street Main Central Panel of Washington Monument: Feb. 7 to Jun. 1, 2020

The National Park Service keeps an updated list of closures and repair work on its website. It’s always a good idea to check the website before you head down to the mall to make sure your favorite attraction is open.
