School districts across Colorado are canceling classes out of an abundance of caution, hoping to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

As the coronavirus pandemic spreads, public school districts across the state of Colorado followed in the footsteps of many colleges and universities and made the decision to cancel classes. This is a developing health crisis and districts across the state made the choice to try and help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Some districts, which begin Spring Break next week or the week after, surprised kids with an extension of one or two weeks, while others have canceled classes until April. We’ve got the list, as it stands now, of school districts in Colorado that have closed due to the coronavirus.

Events, athletics, and classes have been suspended at the following school districts:

  • Adams 12 Five Star schools will be closed from March 16-27.
  • Adams 14 School District canceled classes through March 27 with a plan to reopen on March 30, if conditions are favorable.
  • Aurora Public Schools, which includes Pickens Technical College, has canceled classes until March 27; Spring Break was originally scheduled for March 16-20.
  • Brighton 27J has canceled all classes through March 27, which is the end of that district’s Spring Break.
  • Boulder Valley School District has canceled classes through March 27.
  • Cherry Creek is canceling classes through March 13-27; Spring Break was originally March 16-20.
  • Denver Public Schools took the step of canceling all classes March 16-April 6; their Spring Break was scheduled March 30-April 3. Classes will be held tomorrow March 13, so students may come to school and collect their things.
  • Douglas County School District has canceled classes March 16-27; this includes their Spring Break from March 16.
  • Elbert School District will close from March 17-27, classes will be dismissed at 1:06 p.m. on March 13 and will resume on March 31.
  • Englewood School District has canceled classes from March 16-27 and will release more information to parents and students soon.
  • Gunnison Watershed School District, including Crested Butte, is canceling all classes March 13-30.
  • Jefferson County School District has canceled classes March 16-27 and is moving to online instruction during that time. Students will receive information from teachers and school staff about a Work Plan and expectations for remote learning.
  • Littleton Public Schools has canceled all classes March 16-27, classes will be held March 13. After that classes will resume March 30. 
  • St. Vrain Valley Schools have canceled classes March 13- 27.
  • Weld County RE-8 schools have canceled classes through March 27.
  • Weld County RE-3J classes are canceled through March 27.
  • Westminster Public Schools are closed March 16-27.

El Paso County Schools have announced closures March 16-27 and will reevaluate near the end of that time to decide if schools will resume on March 30. Most will have normal classes on March 13. These schools include:

  • Colorado Springs School District 11
  • Academy School District 20
  • Manitou Springs District 14
  • Cheyenne Mountain School District 12
  • Elbert 200
  • Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8
  • Pikes Peak BOCES
  • Miami-Yoder JT60
  • Harrison District 2
  • Hanover School District #28
  • Lewis-Palmer School District #38
  • Cripple Creek-Victor School District

Several districts will be open on March 13 for students to come in and gather belongings and plan for distance education during the closures. Others are already closed and remain so for the next few weeks. Districts are also working on ways to provide students who rely on schools for regular meals a way to pick up meals during the closures.

Most districts have also canceled all travel, sports, and extracurricular out of an abundance of caution and to control the spread of the virus. Please remember that specific details on each of these closures may change without a lot of notice, so please check with your child’s school district or school website for more information. Most school district websites have detailed information about the closures and what the next steps for parents, staff, and students should be.
