Standley Lake park officials say the egg might not be viable.

Excitement grew on Friday in Standley Lake park as it seemed possible the second eagle egg might hatch at any moment. Fans who would check the live Standley Lake Eagle Cam were hoping to see the little eaglet over the rim of the eagle's nest.

However, Standley Lake park officials announced over the weekend the egg hadn't hatched and it would be unlikely to do so at this point.

“Making observations of the eaglets can be challenging with our view of the nest cup,” park officials reported in Saturday’s post. “After spending (Friday) observing the nest for signs of the second eaglet, we believe SL1 is the only eaglet at this time. Since egg #2 is nearly at the 40-day incubation mark, it’s unlikely it will hatch. It looks like SL1 will be living the life of a spoiled only child after all. Sorry, folks, for the confusion!”

Eagle eggs sometimes fail to hatch if they are infertile or non-viable. Reasons for eggs to be non-viable could be insufficient incubation, cracked or damaged shells, lack of nutrition for the female who laid the egg, and contamination, whether it be bacterial or chemical.

Currently, SL1 is the only offspring of a male called Dad and F420, or Mom, a female who showed up last year and ran off the previous female in the nest. Even though the eagles are affectionately called Mom and Dad by spectators and fans of the live cam, Standley Lake park staff prefer to refer to them in numerical numbers.

"Park staff does not assign human or pet names to the bald eagles for a reason," according to a post on the park's Facebook page. "Anthropomorphizing, or placing human attributes on animals, can blur the line between a neighborhood pet and a wild animal. This sometimes leads to misinformed behavior like approaching the nest, misinterpreting their actions and interfering with their biological life cycles."

It is believed the first egg, now SL1, hatched sometime last week, either Tuesday or Wednesday.
