Justice for Kendrick Castillo—STEM school hero.
Devon Erickson was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Kendrick Castillo, as well as 46 other counts. Erickson was one of the two shooters at the STEM School in Highlands Ranch that happened in May 2019. Kendrick Castillo, a student and a hero, was killed, while several others were injured.
The other defendant, Alec McKinney, previously pled guilty to his charges and testified for the prosecution in Erickson's trial. Sentencing will be on September 17.
Governor Jared Polis released a statement, “Just over two years ago we lost a real Colorado hero who died trying to protect others. Kendrick Castillo’s bravery will never be forgotten. While we cannot bring Kendrick back, we can find solace in the fact that the people responsible for this tragic and unthinkable event will be held accountable. My heart is with John and Maria at this moment, and all of the lives Kendrick touched.”
As a tribute to Castillo, he was forever memorialized in March 2020 when his name was added to the Highway of Heroes. His section of C-470 is between Santa Fe Drive and University. May he always be remembered for his bravery by stopping the shooter before more lives were killed, at the sacrifice of his own.
