Maryland tax-free week begins on Sunday, August 11.
The new school year is just around the corner, which means it’s just about time for back-to-school shopping. Each year, the State of Maryland holds a tax holiday in August that allows parents to buy clothing and shoes, tax-free. The sale includes all clothing priced under $100 and backpacks under $40. Tax-free week begins on Sunday, August 11, and goes through Saturday, August 17, 2019.
What is included?
Tax-free week is designed to help parents get the clothing and shoes kids need for school and save a little money in the process. All clothing items with a price tag under $100 are eligible for the tax exemption. For example, shoppers could buy a pair of shoes for $65, an $80 sweatshirt, and a $40 pair of pants. All of the items would qualify for tax exemption even though the total purchase is over $100. Backpacks under $40 are also tax-exempt, but accessories like handbags and watches are not included. Sports clothing designed specifically for protection, e.g., football pads, are also not included. A full list of exempt and non-exempt items are available on the Maryland Comptroller’s website.
What stores are participating?
You can shop at any retail store in Maryland and get the tax exemption on items that qualify. You may also get the tax exemption for online purchases of clothes as long as the items are purchased and delivered within the week of August 11–17.
In an effort to spread the word about Maryland tax-free week, the state is holding a social media contest where the reward is a $2,500 college scholarship. All you have to do is take pictures or videos featuring Maryland and post them on social media with the hashtag #shopMDtaxfree. More information about the contest is available at marylandtaxes.gov.
