Residents reported seeing a "kangaroo-like" creature on Tuesday morning.

If you happened to see an animal that looked a bit like a kangaroo and a lot out of place hopping around Aurora yesterday, you were not hallucinating or losing your mind. A wallaby is on the loose in the area, and it was last seen near Quincy Avenue and Piccadilly Street.

The escaped red-necked wallaby, Surprise, has a lot of people out looking for him. Surprise normally resides at the Zoology Foundation Sanctuary at Crooked Willow Farms in Larkspur, Colorado. But he escaped about two weeks ago, and the staff has been searching for him ever since.

Surprise is 10 years old, weighs about 50 to 60 pounds, and is about three feet tall.

At least two people reported seeing a “kangaroo-like” animal in Aurora around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and someone called the foundation who sent a team out to look for Surprise. Staff from the sanctuary were unable to locate the runaway wallaby.

Wallabies can travel at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, so it's not out of the realm of logic that Surprise could make his way to Aurora over the course of two weeks, which is about 40 miles away from Larkspur.

“It makes us very hopeful at least we know that hopefully he’s alive and well and doing alright if he made it 40-plus miles north,” Zoology Foundation General Manager Anna Miller said.

Miller says the animal likes to rest during the day and is more active around dusk and dawn. She also asks that anyone who sees him contact them as soon as possible and do not approach the animal. He is very skittish, likely anxious at being in unfamiliar territory, and gets frightened very easily. The foundation says the animal can die of fright if he gets too scared or frightened, so it is important to keep your distance if you do see him.

The Zoology Foundation has a 24-hour phone line that is monitored 24 hours a day: 303-951-8813. Please provide the location where the animal was spotted, and a team will head out to that area to look for him.

The nonprofit organization aims to create a more humane world for animals and to educate and foster the human-animal connection.

Please keep your eye out for Surprise. Hopefully, he can be located and taken home to Larkspur very soon.
