In a recent national study, Virginia Beach took the top spot in the country for charitable giving and caring behavior across the community.
Congratulations, Virginia Beach residents! You just snagged the No. 1 spot on the list of most caring cities in the U.S. The No. 2 spot went to Madison, Wisconsin, and No. 3 was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so you're in good company!
In a recent study, Wallethub analyzed 39 different metrics for 100 of the most populated cities in the country to determine a quantitative score for each city. While charitable giving was one important component of the criteria, it was joined by existing city services and behaviors captured through the survey administered.
Caring for the community, caring for the vulnerable, and caring in the workforce were the three main categories used to organize all of the data collected. The cities were ranked according to their overall score and categorical scores for the three subsets.
Coastal Virginia as a whole scored very well, with Chesapeake coming in at 8th place and Norfolk in 24th place on the final list. The study took into account things like total number of homeless people sheltered, charitable giving, and number of volunteering hours per capita. Adjustments were made to account for the size of the population relative to the data calculations.
On the other side of the spectrum, Birmingham, Alabama, scored the lowest of all cities studied, followed by San Bernadino, California, and Laredo, Texas.
