Virginia drivers will now have a bit of a breathing room to renew their licenses and car registrations.

In light of social distancing regulations and the statewide stay-at-home orders, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will remain closed until mid-May at the earliest.

Many of the standard services can be done online if your driving record doesn't have any holds or issues. The system requires the the creation of an account and password, but at least you won't be sitting in a crowded DMV waiting room.

Because the offices are currently closed, the following extensions have been made:

  • Drivers' licenses and other DMV credentials that expire between March 15 and May 1 will have an additional 90 days beyond the expiration date to renew. Those with an expiration date from May 2 to June 10 will expire on July 31, 2020.
  • Vehicle registrations that expire in March and April are now extended for 90 days, while those that expire in May are extended 60 days.

Sadly, teens can't take the learner's permit exam online. Maybe some additional studying and parallel parking practice will keep them busy until the DMV opens up again.

For more information, or to look up available online services, visit the agency's official website. You can also call (804) 497-7100 with your questions Monday through Friday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday (8 a.m. to 12 p.m.).

Have you tried any of the renewal services on the DMV website yet? Tell us how it went in the comments!
