Photo departments inside Costco will be closing permanently on Valentine’s Day.

First, it was the giant sheet cakes, now it’s the photo center. Warehouse giant Costco has announced it will be closing all of its photo centers next month, moving some services online. After rumors floated around on social media, the company posted a message on its website announcing a closing date of February 14, 2021. Customers with outstanding orders were also sent an email reminding them to pick everything up by March 28, 2021. Many of the existing photo products will still be available through Costco.com.

The pandemic has forced many retail stores to make changes to the services and products available in their establishments. In June, Costco stopped selling its massive sheet cakes as demand waned due to the lack of large parties. It appears the closure of the photo center is more likely due to technology instead of the coronavirus. With the proliferation of smartphones, there is less printing of individual photos and more concentration on personalized items like greeting cards, books, and other gift items.

Costco will continue to offer the following items online for home delivery:

  • Prints, Enlargements & Posters
  • Stationery & Photo Greeting Cards
  • Canvas, Metal & Acrylic Prints
  • Photo Books & Calendars
  • Photo Blankets & Other Photo Gifts
  • Business Printing Products

Costco will no longer offer ink refills, passport photos, photo restoration, and YesVideo Home Movie Transfer Service.

No word on what if anything will replace the photo departments in Costco stores. The company is one of several that have seen record earnings during the pandemic as customers turned to warehouse stores to stockpile groceries, paper products, and other home necessities. In December, the company issued a $10 per share dividend worth $4.4 billion as a result of record earnings.
