Picking up where left off

It was a good start for the defending state champions. All seven won during the opening week of games.

Norfolk Catholic, which won Class C-2 a year ago, answered its first challenge of the season by staying in front of Wahoo Neumann for a 28-21 road win.

The Knights got a touchdown run with 33 seconds left in the first half then caught a touchdown pass seven minutes into the second half for a 21-6 lead. With the margin 21-14, Timmerman then threw a 14-yard halfback TD pass to Hayden Kelley with 2:34, which proved to be the difference.

Defense was dominant for the Class B champ Badgers, who stretched their winning streak to 40 games with a 23-0 win over Waverly.

Boone Central also was solid defensively in a 14-0 win over Hartington Cedar Catholic.

Omaha Westside, seeking its third straight Class A title, waited out a thunderstorm delay to down Omaha North 22-7 Thursday.

Stanton, the Eight Man-1 champ, opened with a 42-16 win over Bloomfield, Eight Man-2 champion Sandhills/Thedford rolled past Anselmo-Merna 58-16 while Six-Man champ SEM, which won the program's first football title last November, started this season with a 52-20 win over Ansley-Litchfield. Chance Daake rushed for two TDs and threw for another.

Offense just in time

Ashland-Greenwood, which returned a handful of starters from last season, knew it would have to rely on its defense early in the season.

Douglas County West's defense was even better most of the night. It intercepted four passes and led 3-0 in the final minute.

But the Bluejays' final drive produced the winning touchdown with 38 seconds left on a 4-yard pass to all-stater Thomas Spears.

Ashland-Greenwood, which entered the night ranked second in Class C-1, will be tested again next Friday when it faces top-ranked Wahoo.

Big win for Pierce

Pierce and Aurora were tied twice in the second half, but Pierce — ranked fourth in Class C-1 — scored the final 13 points for a 41-28 victory over the No. 3 Huskies.

Quarterback Brock Collison scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:31 left, then Pierce scored again in the final minute.

Class C champs meet

Next week's plate of games starts with an appetizing matchup Thursday between last year's Class C-1 and C-2 champions as Boone Central travels to Norfolk Catholic. Boone dropped to C-2 after shutting out Wahoo in the C-1 final.

Jack Bullis, Hampton: Scored eight touchdowns as his team beat Lincoln Parkview 72-28.

Brogan Benes, Boone Central: Rushed for 203 yards on 31 carries in a 14-0 win Hartington CC.

Brock Templar, Blair: Had a 96-yard touchdown run in a win over Lincoln Standing Bear.
