An 'emergency climate mobilization' has been declared by Montgomery County, and seeks to reduce 100 percent of carbon emissions by 2035.

Local leaders in Montgomery County have officially declared an 'emergency climate mobilization,' which is part of an effort to emphasize the need to scale down carbon emissions in the County and beyond. Montgomery County had previously set a goal of reducing emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050, but that goal has been changed to a 100 percent reduction by the year 2035, with the midway goal of an 80 percent reduction by 2027. The 'emergency climate mobilization' is also calling on local, state and federal governments to “use all available powers and resources” in adopting and meeting the same emissions reductions goals set for 2027 and 2035. It was drafted in the wake of the devastation caused by hurricanes in Texas, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Florida, just two weeks after the County called upon the State General Assembly to require by law that 50 perent of electricity must come from renewable sources by 2030.

Fighting Climate Change From Within

The County Council’s declaration will require electricity companies to source minimum portions of electricity sales from renewable sources that include solar and wind power. The County Council’s resolution will also require the County Executive, Public School System and Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission to provide the Council methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Beyond the County’s borders, the resolution is a move to initiate action nationwide, as well as on a global scale, by setting an example for other local, state and federal governments and agencies to follow.
