Sammy the cat received a surprise party and a new forever home!

Talk about the cat's meow! A feline resident at an Ohio animal shelter has become internet famous after receiving a birthday bash this week, which resulted in adorable photos and a new family to go home to!

Cincinnatti Animal CARE Humane Society discovered Sammy was turning 19 years old on June 15. A major feat for any cat, they decided to roll out the red carpet and throw him the ultimate birthday celebration. Kitty City staff provided decorations, party hats, and a cake for the senior, who's pictured wearing a glittery blue cowboy hat and collar as he checks out the goodies in his cage.

Sammy had been at the shelter for about a week before the party. His owner had to move into an assisted living facility and was unable to continue caring for him, according to the shelter.

Staff members documented the party on Facebook, which prompted a wave of likes and comments from followers filled with birthday wishes for the elderly boy. They also sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

"Happy birthday to this beautiful fella who would love a nice, quiet home to live out his golden years!" the shelter wrote in a post.

In addition to the party, Sammy received the purrrfect ending: the gift of a new home. The family who had shown interest in him leading up to the occasion showed up the next day to bring him home, complete with a senior companion and a new hat (we're not crying, you're crying!).

The shelter also transformed a room into Sammy's Senior Center, housing additional elderly cats in need of loving homes. Elderly cats have a notoriously difficult time getting adopted compared to their kitten counterparts, and they hope to use the viral attention to encourage pet owners to consider adopting older animals. You can see what animals are currently up for adoption here.

We wish Sammy and his adopted family all the best as they become a furever family together!

Animal-lovers, have you adopted an elderly pet before? Share your experiences with us in the comments, as well as any good thoughts for Sammy!
