RECALL: 18 Brands of Dog Food Recalled by FDA Over Toxin Concerns

Check the list below to see if your dog food brand is included in the recall.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced an expansion of a voluntary recall on 18 dog food brands. The recall was issued over a concern that all the products may contain an above-acceptable level of Aflatoxin, a by-product of mold.

The foods manufactured by Sunshine Mills, a family-owned company from Alabama, were sold under different brand names. Previously, the company had done a voluntary recall of six products on September 2, when the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry found unsafe Aflatoxin levels in one of their dog food samples.

Brands like Champ Mini Chunk Dog Food Beef and Chicken Flavor, Whiskers & Tails Adult Recipe Complete Dog Food, Good Dog Brand Dog Food Hi-Energy Formula, Old Glory Hearty Beef & Chicken Flavor Dog Food, Paws Happy Life Nutritionally Complete Dog Food are affected in the recent recall. The products have already been distributed to retailers across the country.

What is Aflatoxin toxicity and what are its symptoms?

Aflatoxin is a by-product of a type of mold (Aspergillus flavus) which can grow in corns and grains used in pet food. This product can even be present in the food without any visible mold. If consumed in high quantity, the product can cause severe illness, liver issues, or even death. Some symptoms of aflatoxin toxicity, also known as aflatoxicosis, are:

sluggishness or lethargy
loss of appetite
vomiting
a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums (an indication of liver damage)
diarrhea

Sometimes, a pet can have a damaged liver without any symptoms. Aflatoxin can accumulate in a dog’s system over time, causing delayed poisoning. It is advisable to get your pet checked by their veterinarians if they consumed any of the recalled products.

“Provide a full diet history to your veterinarian. You may find it helpful to take a picture of the pet food label, including the lot number,” FDA stated in their announcement.

Currently, FDA, along with Sunshine Mills and the Louisiana DAF, is investigating other food products for the toxic mold and will be updating their list as required. The current recall includes the following products.

The FDA recommends sanitizing your dog food storage containers and food trays using bleach and water. Consumers can return unopened and partially used products for a full refund. They can also discard of the products safely, keeping out of reach of children and other pets.

If you suspect your pet is intoxicated, you can report to the FDA online in the agency’s Safety Reporting Portal or call them at FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

No illness has yet been reported from the recalled products, and no evidence of human intoxication from Aflatoxin has been found.
