An official announcement was made on Saturday.
**This article originally reported that Trump planned to choose Amy Coney Barrett. It has been updated to reflect the latest news that he has indeed nominated Barret.
President Donald Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court, created by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week.
Barrett, 48, met with the president at the White House on Monday and Tuesday of last week. She was also a leading candidate back when Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh. The announcement was officially made on Saturday at the White House.
Barrett is Trump's third Supreme Court appointee in his presidency, following Justices Neil Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. If confirmed, she will also become the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court, following Sandra Day O'Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan.
Barrett is currently a circuit judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Her originalist judicial philosophy is similar to that of Antonin Scalia, who served on the Supreme Court until his passing in 2016.
