Pet-food maker Sunshine Mills Inc. issued a voluntary recall of one of its dog food varieties due to potential salmonella contamination.
The product in question is its Nature's Menu Super Premium Dog Food with a Blend of Real Chicken & Quail, which comes in 3- and 13.5-pound bags. The precautionary recall was issued after a sample of the food tested positive for salmonella. Multiple samples of the same lot tested negative for the bacteria. Out of an abundance of caution, the company issued the voluntary recall in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The food was distributed nationwide through retail stores with packaging contain UPC numbers 7015514363 and 7015514365. Retailers who received the affected lots have been notified and asked to remove any recalled products from their shelves and inventory. Consumers who purchased food from the recalled lots should stop using it and return the unused portion to the store where they bought it for a full refund.
There have been no illnesses, injuries or complaints associated with the potential contamination to date, the company said.

Salmonella poses a threat to both animals that eat the food and humans who handle it. Pets that consume food contaminated with salmonella may become lethargic and have diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. The company urges pet owners to consult with their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product.
Humans are also at risk if they handled contaminated products, especially if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after touching the product or surfaces that have been exposed to it. Potential symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. While rare, salmonella can cause more serious symptoms and infections. Pet owners who have come in contact with the recalled product should monitor themselves for symptoms and contact their health care provider if they experience any.
