One suspect is in custody, and law enforcement are still actively pursuing two more suspects following a fatal shooting in Adams County on Wednesday night.

The two remaining suspects are considered armed and dangerous, so area residents are encouraged to stay inside and steer clear of windows and doors. Approximately 20 Adams County schools and businesses are closed today as a result. The two suspects are described as being either light-skinned African American men or dark-skinned Latino men, dressed in all-black clothing. When deputies arrived at approximately 7 p.m., the suspects fled, leading them on a chase behind a house. One of the pursued men fired several rounds from a handgun, hitting sheriff's deputy Heath Gumm, 32, in the chest. Gumm was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The ongoing manhunt involves canine units, SWAT teams, and the assistance of the Aurora police. If you have any information about the suspects or their whereabouts, please call the Adams County Sheriff's Department at 720-322-1313. To donate to the fallen officer's family, please click here.
