The Trump Administration is proposing a massive stimulus package to help Americans.

The Trump Administration has announced major proposals designed to prop up Americans during the COVID-19 crisis. In a daily briefing at the White House, President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced the delay of tax income filing requirements and a proposal to give all Americans a stimulus check. The checks would be part of an $850 billion bill Congress is working to pass this week.

The amount of the checks Americans could expect would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000. Secretary Mnuchin said the President has instructed him to get the checks out “now.” The administration had floated the idea of a payroll tax but stated that distributed checks now would help those who have lost their jobs or been laid off.

Effective immediately, the administration will also be giving taxpayers a 90-day extension to both file a tax return and submit payments. The government will give individuals that owe taxes a 90-day, tax-free and interest extension for up to $1 million. Secretary Mnuchin is still encouraging tax filers that are due a refund to file as soon as possible so they can get those funds in hand.

The proposed $850 billion package is in addition to a $100 million package passed by the House last weekend that provides paid sick leave and unemployment insurance. Details are still in flux, but Mnuchin hopes Congress will pass a bill by the end of this week.

The COVID-19 virus has sickened 4,226 people and killed 75 people in the United States as of March 17, 2020. Measures to prevent the spread of the disease have closed restaurants, bars, hotels, schools, and businesses in nearly every state across the nation.
