Volkswagen taps into fan creativity with web contest to design the exterior of the Atlas Cross Sport R race car.
Have you ever wanted to design the exterior of a race car? Are you a big Volkswagen or desert racing fan? Early in February of this year, Volkswagen announced that they were opening a contest to design the exterior of the new Atlas Cross Sport R race car. The competition is open to all legal residents of the U.S. who are 18 or older, and the company has downloadable assets on the competition site that participants can use for their design. If you haven't been working on your design, now is the time to get those creative juices flowing.
The contest hopes to find an exciting design for the exterior of the desert racer, which is currently in concept form. In the announcement, Volkswagen explained the idea behind the contest with a quote from Reto Brun, Director of Volkswagen’s Design Center California:
“We are continuously amazed by the creativity of our customers and fans. Volkswagen is the people’s car brand and we’re excited to see how the people propose to wrap our latest off-road racer.”
The contest opened on February 21, 2020, and will run until midnight on March 31, 2020. It is open to any artists, designers, or folks who are simply fans of off-road racing or the brand. The assets available on the contest website include a side-view, front-view, and top-down-view of the racer as well as the VW and R logos. Both the VW and R logos must be included in the design. Aside from that requirement, your design is only limited by your creativity.
Entries must be one's original work, and they have to be digital files. Entries must also be submitted as a JPEG or PNG file that is less than 10MB. The entry that wins will need to be resubmitted as a high-res version of the design.
All entries will be judged on four categories: Visual Appeal (40%), Originality and Creativity (40%), Overall Quality (10%), and Appropriateness to Brand (10%). Entries must be submitted online before the contest ends in order to qualify for judging.

The designs will be judged by a panel of designers, drivers, and executives. If your design wins the contest, you get to see that design become a reality on a real race car in a race later this year. The winner will also get to take a guest with them to attend a pre-race test experience with Volkswagen. The winning design will be announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in June.
