After the Golden Globes on Sunday night, rumors are circulating that Oprah Winfrey might run for president in 2020. But would that be a good or bad thing?
Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 75th Golden Globe Awards, on Sunday, January 7, with an inspiring speech about our changing society, saying that "speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have." And her words "a new day is on the horizon" has everyone aflutter with excitement that a potential presidential bid is in the works. The talk was only fueled by Golden Globes host Seth Meyers who joked in his monologue that President Donald Trump decided to run for office following Meyers' comments at the White House Correspondence Dinner in 2011, during which he poked fun at Trump's lack of presidential qualifications.“Some have said that night convinced [Trump] to run,” Meyers said. “So if that’s true, I just want to say, Oprah, you will never be president. You do not have what it takes.”The comment was, of course, made tongue-in-cheek, in hopes that the beloved talk-show host/actress/author/entrepreneur actually could (and would) run for president. Then, reports began circulating that two of her friends are confirming that she's actually thinking of running for the office, though she has not decided one way or the other. Even her longtime partner Stedman Graham made comments that did not rule out a potential presidential run.
"It's up to the people," Graham told the Los Angeles Times. "She would absolutely do it."
In the past, Oprah has always stated that she would not run. But that doesn't always mean anything. Minds can change. And in the current political climate, I would submit that anything is possible -- especially with the "sources" weighing in that she is thinking about it now.
So does Oprah have what it takes? Though lacking actual political experience, the media mogul does have a wealth of humanitarian experience and is arguably one of the most powerful women in America. She gained her fame through "The Oprah Winfrey Show," but now serves as CEO of OWN (her cable channel) and as a special correspondent for CBS's 60 Minutes, among other endeavors.
Her billionaire and household name status would make it easy for her to become an automatic contender in the race for president.
