This past Wednesday, tolls on I-66 reached $46.75 (one way!) due to a delay on the road.

And the worst part is that this isn’t even the highest it has gone.

People that live in Northern Virginia and commute into Washington, D.C., are fully aware and very used to paying tolls to get into the city. I-66 is one of the main ways to enter, so of course, no one is surprised that it isn’t as easy as one would like.

Before 2017, you could only use the carpool lane if you had two or more passengers in your car, but because people were abusing the system and driving by themselves through the lane, the law changed. Now you can legally drive through the carpool lane on your own, but you will have to pay a toll. And those tolls can get (and have gotten) pretty steep.

The killer with these tolls is that the prices change every six minutes or so, to account for the amount of congestion and the number of cars on the road. So you can imagine that if there is any sort of delay, those toll prices will rise quickly.

While the point of the tolls is clear in terms of trying to reduce traffic and congestion on the road, people are still driving their cars on I-66, still commuting by themselves, and still contributing to the price increase.

I don’t know how they do it, because paying a toll back and forth every day sounds horrendous. Sitting in traffic also sounds awful. Depending on their destination, maybe these people can take the Metro instead? You know, before toll prices reach over $50 a ride.
