Green Thumb Industries of Chicago have revealed the future location of the very first Maryland medical marijuana dispensary.

The property on 7900 Fenton Street in Silver Spring and the former home of Banner Glass will soon become a medical marijuana dispensary. The Chicago-based company Green Thumb Industries has secured a license to open the shop in Silver Spring and has also confirmed the soon to be location. The property is situated near Fenton Street Urban Park and downtown Silver Spring. Green Thumb Industries is one of two companies that have been granted licenses to sell medical Cannabis in the Silver Spring, Tacoma Park, White Oak and Four Corners neighborhoods. Eugene Monroe, a former offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, is an investor in Green Thumb Industries and has expressed his support for opening a dispensary in Maryland. Monroe has used marijuana as an alternative to strong and addictive opioid painkillers to treat his football injuries. Thus far, the state’s Medical Cannabis Program has approved 102 licenses for dispensaries since medical marijuana was granted legal status in 2013. Green Thumb Industries plans to sell cannabis buds, capsules, oils, pills and topical creams. The company expects that as many as 150 patient-customers will stop in every day. A spokesperson for the company has said that the building will be remodeled prior to opening. Currently, the law in Maryland states that caregivers and patients 21 and older may purchase the drug with a prescription once the program has been finalized. Companies that have gained approval are now working to secure zoning approvals as criminal background checks are being conducted. Under the law, medical marijuana can be obtained when a patient has:
“any condition that is severe, for which medical treatments have been ineffective, and if the patient has a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition that causes severe loss of appetite, wasting, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures or severe or persistent muscle spasms or glaucoma or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”
