Where's our basic human decency?

The threat of coronavirus is a touchy, nerve-racking subject these days, as is the upcoming presidential election. But weaponizing the pandemic towards any group of people, regardless of their political leanings, crosses a line. And I think we can all agree that the tweet of a Denver councilwoman last week was inappropriate at best, and all her constituents—no matter what side of the aisle—deserve better.

Last Friday, Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca re-tweeted a statement that said, "For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I'm attending every MAGA rally I can." CdeBaca accompanied the retweet with "#solidarity Yaaaas!!” followed by crying laughing emojis.

The tweet, of course, implied that coronavirus could be used to intentionally infect a group of people at political rallies.

Though CdeBaca's re-tweet was published on Friday, it received little attention until this week. Following the fast-moving outrage online, the original tweet from Susan Daniel was deleted on Tuesday after garnering nearly 2,500 comments and less than 100 likes.

Regardless of which political side one leans toward, this action by one of our city representatives is unprofessional, indecent, and reeking of poor judgment. Though it was most certainly a joke, it's this kind of "joking" that certainly isn't contributing any goodwill or respect to our current political climate.

Hopefully, Councilwoman CdeBaca will recognize her error and make a public apology.

CdeBaca represents Denver's District 9.
