EDIT: Shooter identified as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. He is also confirmed to be dead after police returned fire.
As GOP Members of Congress were practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game in Alexandria this morning, a gunman opened fire and injured several people.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, four people have been confirmed to have been shot during a GOP charity baseball game practice after a gunman opened fire during warmups. Among those shot include Representative Steve Scalise, a republican representative from Louisiana. The suspect has been taken into custody and transported to George Washington Hospital in D.C. Investigators have not yet identified a motive as to why the gunman opened fire.
The shooting happened in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria where several members of congress were gathered for baseball practice. The members of congress that were present were all Republican. Thus far, House Majority Whip Scalise is the only congressman to have been injured after being shot in the hip, there is currently no word yet on his condition. The suspect was armed with a rifle, after he opened fire members of the security detail that were present fired back at the shooter and as many as 100 shots were fired in the exchange and incident itself.
Besides Representative Scalise, the Members of Congress present at the baseball practice were; Mo Brooks of Alabama, Jimmy Duncan of Tennessee, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Joe Barton of Texas, Brad Wenstrup of Ohio, Steve Pearce of New Mexico, Steven Palazzo of Mississippi and Matt Gaetz of Florida.
As Police have apprehended the shooter the Alexandria Police Department has said that there is no longer a threat in relation to the park shooting and that the victims were being transported to nearby hospitals. Meanwhile the FBI has joined the investigation on the scene as its headquarters is just seven miles from the Del Ray park. In all five people have been reported injured which include Scalise, two police officers, and two others. There were no fatalities in the shooting.
