This week, Kings Dominion officially displayed a new sign outside the Twisted Timbers roller coaster announcing a new rule: Absolutely no cell phones allowed.

Recently, park attendee and Chesterfield resident Reann Mayfield was dangerously injured by a flying cell phone while riding the roller coaster. The cell phone left a two-inch gash on her head. She suffered from headaches for weeks afterward.

Kings Dominion refunded Mayfield her cost of admission, but she's still left with a visible permanent scar.

While the Richmond-area amusement park can't undo her injury, Mayfield is happy Kings Dominion installed the signs.

“It’s going to be wonderful because now people can rest at ease knowing that their children can go on the rides and be safe,” Mayfield said. “Knowing that articles are not going to be flying out from other individuals' pockets.”

While Kings Dominion, like most theme parks, already had signs warning against loose articles, the ban on cell phones specifically is new.

“The part about no cell phones on Twisted Timbers stands out the most,” Mayfield said.

A spokeswoman for Kings Dominion told the media that the signs were installed "to further clarify and reinforce the loose article policy."

While most of us worry about losing a cell phone on a roller coaster, we don't often think about the fact that it could become a critical weapon. But when you're flying through the air on a roller coaster that quickly, any loose object doesn't just get lost -- it becomes an object of powerful force with the potential to damage a lot more than just your screen.

Now, Kings Dominion's ban on cell phones on roller coasters hopes to avoid that problem implicitly -- and protect itself from liability as it protects the other participants on the ride.

The park hopes attendees will listen.
