A camp with a great cause, the Surfers Healing camp made its way to OC earlier this month!
On August 15, Surfers Healing -- a unique camp for kids with autism -- popped into Ocean City for the ninth year in a row.
Surfers Healing takes kids with autism, teaches them how to surf, and gives them and their families an enjoyable day on the beach! According to The Dispatch, 200 children with autism, their families, and surfers from all over made their way to the beach in Ocean City for the day-long camp. Throughout the day, professional surfers took the kids out on tandem boards to play in the ocean.
The camp started in the 1990s with Israel and Danielle Paskowitz, whose second child was diagnosed with autism. During a surfing competition in Hawaii, their son was having a meltdown, so Paskowitz tossed him into the ocean. Seeing that the boy was happy in the water, he grabbed his surfboard and rode out into the ocean with his son. After this moment, Paskowitz wondered if surfing could help other autistic kids, too.
Over the years, the camp has provided a safe, stress-free, and supportive environment for children with autism and their loved ones. We can't wait to see what else this wonderful camp does in the years to come!
