Prepare for detours this weekend as the construction for the I-264/64 expansion project continues.
Just when you thought traffic in Hampton Roads could not possibly get any worse, it did. As residents are already aware, the city has been working on an expansion project right at the I-264 to I-64 interchange near Newtown and Witchduck Road. The city has chosen to focus on construction this weekend as this is the best time to make progress. The expected completion date is October 2019.
WHEN: Friday, January 4, at 7 p.m. -- Monday, January 7, at 5 a.m.
WHERE: At the I-264 to I-64 interchange near Newtown and Witchduck Road
There are good reasons behind it all! According to VDOT, the expansion project is expected to provide additional capacity, reduce daily congestion, and improve safety and traffic overall.
The city urges residents to plan on taking a different route or adding more time to your trips this weekend. Crews will be working to get as much work done as possible, and detours are only expected to last through the weekend.
Check out the following two maps of detour routes:
Here is the detour map for I-64 traffic. Residents are rerouted to take exit 284A and ride the Cloverfield ramps to I-264 east.

The times for the construction detours are also dependent on the weather. Friday is projected to have afternoon showers, possibly delaying the construction process.
