Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News were the Hampton Roads cities listed in the report.
In a study by 24/7 Wall Street, three Hampton Roads cities — Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News — were ranked together as 14th out of 50 for places Americans are moving away from. In some parts of the country, cities have lost tens of thousands of residents, the report also says.
Here's the breakdown according to USA Today: Around 40 million Americans move at least once in a given year, and many of these movers are young people relocating within cities. But many are also moving to warmer climates, more affordable areas, and better job opportunities. When you combine these trends with the recent economic recovery, the result is a decline in cities' populations.
Among the Hampton Roads cities listed, the population decrease due to migration was 17,297 from 2010 to 2017. To put this in perspective, the Chicago area is listed as No. 1, and it experienced a 296,320-person population decrease due to migration within that same timeframe.
The report shows that most people are moving away from the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast, which includes cities such as Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, New York, and Los Angeles.
24/7 Wall Street reviewed population figures from the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program. By doing so, they were able to find the metropolitan areas with the largest net decline in population as a result of migration between 2010 and 2017, according to USA Today.
