San Antonio is ready to light up the holidays . There are dozens of ways the city has found to celebrate this season that are both festive and safe. From hot chocolate on river cruises to starry safaris and nocturnal moonlight tours, there’s adventure throughout the city.
The holidays are a beautiful time of year in San Antonio. Arts, culture and phenomenal food create an atmosphere that is tailor made for the holidays. Enjoy long walks along the Mission Reach of the River Walk and tour the World Heritage Site Spanish Colonial Missions. Stay in modern hotels decked out for the season. Or discover art and history at one of the many museums throughout the city.
River Walk Wonderland
Let’s start with the beautiful River Walk. For generations San Antonio has been renowned for its spectacular holiday light displays along the winding River Walk, creating a stunning backdrop for countless family photos. The cypress and oak trees along the banks are draped with over 100,000 lights every year, and this year is no exception. The holiday light display lights up November 27 th thru January 2 nd .
Interested in making your stroll into a float? Consider hopping a ride with Go Rio ; they’ll be having their special holiday cruises again this year. Boating under the lights of the River Walk is always magical, but add in some hot chocolate and dessert, and it’s like being a kid again.
Explore the Gardens by Flashlight
Discover the nocturnal world of nature at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens . The Gardens are hosting two flashlight walks on November 10th and December 8th. Families and friends are invited to explore a light maze, enjoy amazing food, and take part in a host of outdoor activities. And be sure to put December 5th on your calendar; that’s when the Paws Parade takes place with local pets strutting their finery through the Gardens.
SeaWorld’s Christmas: The Largest Light Display in Texas
The biggest light display in Texas returns this holiday season during SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration. Over 9 millions light, Sesame Street characters, and of course, Santa Claus, Rudolph, and their North Pole friends will all come together to make for a festive time for all.
Experience the season’s brightest thrills
Six Flags Fiesta Texas Holiday in the Park is also back with lights, holiday train rides, and of course, Santa. Bugs Bunny and the whole crew will be on hand for photos and fun.
Caroling in the Caverns
Natural Bridge Caverns will kick off the holidays with Hill Country style. Santa “Spelunker” Claus will be on-site, looking for help to round up his reindeer in the 5,000 sq. ft. outdoor maze. There will be a new ⅓ mile-long walking holiday light trail, s’mores, and of course, carols in the caverns. The festivities kick off on December 5th.
Zoo Lights – a Starry Safari is a family favorite every year, and it’s back this holiday season. The San Antonio Zoo lets the animals go to bed, then lights up the zoo with incredible life sized animal light displays, including a 15 foot tall giraffe. Decorating cookies and roasting s’mores with Mrs. Claus, a visit with Santa, and get in some dancing at the Latin-inspired Lakeside Light Show (new this year).
Brick it UP
LEGOland is celebrating with a Bricktacular! There will be a life size tree built out of LEGOs as well as a chance to visit with the elves in the workshop for those critical builder tips. Rumor has it that there will even be a snowfall in the mini-San Antonio exhibit.
Rodeo, Cowboys and more!
Tejas Rodeo will be showcasing cowboy culture through the heart stopping action of rodeo. Events continue through the end of November. To top off your holiday with a more western flair, head over to the Briscoe Western Art Museum on December 15th to have a sit down with Cowboy Santa.
