There is sad news to report this week as we lost another Mississippi Hall of Famer in Bob Tyler. Tyler, who died this past Sunday, was head coach at Mississippi State from 1973-79. He was an assistant coach at Ole Miss (‘68-’70) and Alabama (‘71-’72).

Six college football players from MSU and Ole Miss were drafted on the final day of the 2024 NFL draft. Mississippi State’s Decamerion Richardson (CB) went to Las Vegas, Jaden Crumedy (DT) went to Carolina and Nathaniel Watson (LB) went to Cleveland. The three Ole Miss selections were Deantre Prince (CB) to Jacksonville and Cedric Johnson (DE) and Daijahn Anthony (DB) both to Cincinnati.

Greenville running back Trey Benson of Florida State was selected by Arizona in the third round. Another Mississippi native FSU defensive back Jarrion Jones of Northwest Rankin was selected also in the third round by Jacksonville while George County’s defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson was selected by Cincinnati. Former Ole Miss quarterback John Rhys Plumlee was signed as a free agent by Pittsburgh while USM’s Frank Gore Jr. signed a free agent contract with Buffalo.

The New Orleans Saints drafted Oregon State offensive tackle Taliesa Fuaga, Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler, Pitt wide out Bub Means, Texas linebacker Jaylan Ford, Northern Iowa defensive tackle Khristian Boyd and Eastern Kentucky tackle Josiah Ezirim.

Mississippi State won their fourth SEC series of the year by winning two of three at Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs (29-15, 12-9) will host Alabama beginning Friday. USM (27-17, 12-9) lost two of three at Louisiana and will host Coastal Carolina starting Friday. Ole Miss won only one of the three games against visiting Alabama. The Rebels (23-20, 7-14) will travel to Auburn this Friday. State and Ole Miss will square off in the Governor’s Cup in Pearl this Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Delta State swept Mississippi College in a three-game series. Delta State (28-20, 19-11) will be the third seed in the Gulf South Conference tournament this week in Oxford, Alabama. William Carey wrapped up their regular season with a sweep of Loyola of New Orleans. The Crusaders (30-14, 20-10) will travel to Jackson, Tennessee, for the conference tournament this week along with Blue Mountain (29-19, 13-17). Millsaps, Rust and Tugaloo all fell in their respective conference tournaments last week.

Pearl River wrapped up the MACCC regular season title for the third time in four years this past weekend. The nation’s fourth ranked Wildcats (46-8, 25-3) will host the Region 23 Tournament. LSU-Eunice (44-6) and the winner of the four MACCC’s four play-in series will join the Wildcats in Poplarville May 13-17. The best of three play-in series will begin this Friday in Decatur, Senatobia, Ellisville and Meridian. Number two seed East Central (48-4, 24-4) hosts Northeast (26-25, 12-16), Northwest (37-15, 21-7) entertains Hinds (26-27, 14-14). Jones (37-13, 19-9) welcomes East Mississippi (29-20, 15-13) while Meridian (33-17, 18-10) hosts Co-Lin (27-25, 15-13).

Co-Lin softball won their first regular season conference title in program history. The Lady Wolves (39-3, 26-1) were followed by Jones (34-12, 21-5), PRC (41-10, 21-7), Hinds (32-14, 21-7), East Central (33-13,19-9), Gulf Coast (33-21, 15-12) and Northeast (36-20, 15-13). Region 23 play will be Friday-Sunday.

Mississippi College for the first time since 1993 won the conference softball title as they swept a twin bill from Delta State last Saturday. MC (42-6, 24-6) will be the top seed in the Gulf South conference tournament in Oxford, Alabama, this week. Belhaven (34-4, 15-1) is seeded second in the CCS tournament beginning Thursday in Montgomery.

The Mississippi State women’s golf team heads to their fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance and 11th overall. The Lady Bulldogs, who won the SEC championship for the first time in program history, travel to take part in the Bermuda Run Regional in North Carolina May 6-8. Ole Miss will make their 15th NCAA tournament and will also be included in the twelve team Bermuda Run.
