Downtown Denver residents and workers will have the added convenience that a Target store brings when one of those familiar round logos hangs its hat on the 16th Street Mall next year.

Popular retailer Target Corp. announced that it will open a small-format 28,000-square-foot location at 16th and California Street before next summer.

“Target is thrilled to bring our first small-format store to Colorado and be part of a thriving community in Downtown Denver,” said Target senior vice president Mark Schindele in a statement released by Downtown Denver Partnership, Inc.

Though smaller than typical Targets (which usually run around 100,000 square feet or more), the store will include groceries, home decor, apparel, health and beauty products, and a CVS pharmacy. It will also feature a modern design and a third-level glass atrium that will overlook the 16th Street Mall.

“This represents a huge win for downtown Denver," said Mark Sidell, president of Gart Properties LLC, part-owner of the property. "Adding Target to the retail mix delivers a long sought-after and key component necessary to support a viable and thriving downtown."

“We are excited to spearhead the effort working with the City, the Office of Economic Development and the Downtown Denver Partnership, to create a mutually beneficial opportunity for Target to join other leading retailers on the 16th Street Mall,” he added.

Other retailers planning to come to downtown Denver within the next year include Whole Foods and Sephora.
